Art direction: light as a storyteller

A painted valley at sunset with snow-capped mountains

Light is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in a game. In this article we share the visual principles that guide the art direction of our first title.

Fewer colours, stronger mood

We work with a restrained palette of cool greys and deep shadows, accented by a single warm colour. Limiting the palette gives every highlight more meaning and keeps the world visually coherent from one area to the next.

Fog, depth and scale

Layers of fog help us create depth and a sense of distance. Mountains, buildings and landmarks fade into the background, making the world feel larger than the playable space and inviting players to wonder what lies beyond.

A light worth following

Throughout the game, small points of light act as quiet guides. A lit window, a lantern or a distant signal tells the player that something is waiting to be found, without breaking the atmosphere with on-screen instructions.

We will continue to share our art direction as development progresses. Stay tuned for more.
